After eighty minutes of tightly contested rugby, the match between the FNB Ikey Tigers and Tygerberg ended in a draw. 24-24 was the final score, with Tygerberg remaining undefeated as the FNB Ikey Tigers weren’t able to snatch victory in the closing minutes of the game.
“We’ll never be satisfied with a draw, but we’ll take it and move forward,” said Christiaan Esterhuizen. “We did play against a good Tygerberg side who were full of confidence from going unbeaten in their five game. Both teams had the opportunities to win the game, but neither one really went out there and took it,” he added.
“We dominated territory and played in all the right spaces. Without being subjective, I’d say that we were the better team on the day. They kept feeding off of our mistakes, and again we had a chance to win it with a kick later on in the match, but we missed that one as well,” Esterhuizen explained.
The team’s last match before the examination period and holiday is this Saturday against UWC, a team they have already beaten twice this season. However, Esterhuizen has made it known that that won’t mean the team will let their guard down. “UWC aren’t sitting pretty at the moment, they want the points so that makes them a dangerous side. We won’t be overly confident or complacent because we really do respect them as a team,” he said.
“We have to be at our best and put them under consistent pressure. Hopefully we can repeat our performance from the promotion/relegation match we played against them. The boys were fighting hard in their last match and they learnt valuable lessons. They’re growing every single week so we’re excited for this game” Esterhuizen added.
The FNB Ikey Tigers are set to take on FNB UWC at UCT’s Green Mile at 14:30 on Saturday, the 21st of April.
