Ikey Tigers ready to start fresh against Durbell
After a disappointing FNB Varsity Cup campaign, the FNB Ikey Tigers are ready to begin their domestic season against Durbanville this Saturday.
“The win last Monday gave us some confidence. Now we just have to build on that confidence and start fresh again,” said Christiaan Esterhuizen, who will be steering the ship for the FNB Ikey’s WP Super League season.
In the last match of their Varsity Cup campaign, the team emphatically ensured that the Varsity Cup competition would be returning to the Green Mile next year. Now they’re ready to put that behind them and focus on building momentum for the imminent season.
In terms of the squad updates for the league season, a few players have left for Western Province duty, while the team has been able to get a few old heads back into the mix. “Our Varsity Cup team was really young, but we’ve got a few non-students into the team again now. They’ve been in the first team before and have experienced success in the past, so it’s nice to have a boost in seniority,” said Esterhuizen. They include scrumhalf James Alexander and prop Robin Murray, who both played in the magic 2014 Varsity Cup final victory, as well as experienced flank Brad Bosman who’s Ikey Tigers career reaches as far back as 2010.
“Ninety-five percent of our team will still be Varsity Cup guys, and although we’ve lost some players to Western Province, we’ve got 5 or 6 coming in. Hopefully we can give the fans more positive results. We really want to start playing positive and exciting rugby again,” added Esterhuizen.
The FNB Ikey Tigers Team to take on Durbell:
15 Mike Muller, 14 Gerard Pieterse, 13 Liam Furniss, 12 Paul Hendry, 11 Brad Janse van Rensburg, 10 Tom Bednall, 9 James Alexander, 8 Nyasha Tarusenga, 7 Brad Bosman, 6 Alva Sendrayani, 5 Duncan Saffy, 4 Jade Kriel, 3 Kyle Whyte, 2 Cullen Callopy, 1 Robin Murray
Replacements:
16 Michael Kennedy, 17 Sam Theron, 18 Olwethu Hans, 19 Msizi Zondi (TBC), 20 Dylan Tydbury, 21 Rob Anderson, 22 Luke Bax/Khanyo Ncugana (TBC)
