After narrowly missing out on victory last time out, the FNB Ikey Tigers will be ready to set the record straight against False Bay on Saturday. Having already played False Bay in their preseason run in preparation for the FNB Varsity Cup, the fans can take heart from the impressive performance the boys put in during their last encounter. Furthermore, the last time the FNB Ikey Tigers faced a team during the season whom they had already faced in their preseason, they won 40-5 against FNB UWC.
Last time the teams met, captain Guy Alexander spoke about the physical test he was expecting to face and how pleased he was with the Ikey Tiger’s performance. But that was during preseason, and come Saturday, the team will be hoping to lift the Mark Jordaan Memorial Trophy after the final whistle of their annual derby blows.
“False Bay are a strong side. I can tell you that it’s going to be a good rugby match and it will probably go down to the wire,” said Christiaan Esterhuizen.
Last season, False Bay managed to pull off a 30-14 victory against the team from UCT, and there’s no doubt that the FNB Ikey Tigers are looking to pull out all the stops to make sure the Mark Jordaan Memorial Trophy returns to the Green Mile.
“We’re expecting rain on the day, but we’ll adapt and switch things up. Hopefully we can show them a few unexpected things,” he added.
With all eyes on the big match ahead, coach Esterhuizen is still aware of the fact that the team are scheduled to play Primrose on Wednesday, the 27th of April. “All focus and preparation has gone into this game, but at the back of my mind I know we need to be mindful of Wednesday’s match,” concluded Esterhuizen.
The FNB Ikey Tigers are set to clash with False Bay on Saturday, the 23rd of April at 15:30 at Groote Schuur.
