Ikey Tigers cruise past Villagers

The Ikey Tigers picked up their eighth consecutive win as they outclassed a plucky Villager side 41-3 on Saturday.

Especially during the first half UCT showed a dominant display unleashing their dangerous runners who cut through the Village defense out wide. They scored a total of eight tries, with Villagers only consolation a single three pointer by flyhalf Warren Edwards.

It was not the home teams lack of trying, but the Ikeys resolute defense, that kept out the rumbling Villagers pack on a number of high pressure occasions.

The students were quick to the break down points as well, with their lose trio of Nick Fenton Wells, Don Armand and Greg Mallet, claiming a number of turnover balls in the process.

UCT opened their account in the eight minute as Nicholas Holton eased through a gap in the Villager defense to dot down. He converted his own try as well. Ikeys skipper and new Currie Cup cap Nicholas Fenton-Wells picked up three tries, while his teammates added two more tries before the half-time break.

The second half conditions were deteriorating as rain made the ball and the field slippery, but UCT added two tries in the second-half.

The win sees the Ikeys consolidate their position in fourth place but have two games in hand over league leader,  Maties.
