Ikey Tigers claim SWD Eagles scalp
The FNB Ikey Tigers ended their week away in Plettenberg Bay with a hard-fought 33-22 win over the SWD Eagles in George on Saturday afternoon.
The 2011 Varsity Cup champions had a fun-filled week in Plett and coach Kevin Foote declared himself happy with their seven days spent away from Cape Town.
Saturday’s match against the Eagles, however, also gave the coach some hope ahead of the 2013 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International.
“It wasn’t perfect… but we were up against a physical pack and it gave the guys a taste of what to expect,” said Foote. “We were missing quite a few players because of injuries, but I was happy with a lot of aspects of play.”
Kenyan Sevens ace David Ambunya scored two of UCT’s six tries – including the winner – against the Eagles who also went down to the Madibaz a few days ago.
Of course, the Ikeys will start their 2013 Varsity Cup season against the selfsame Madibaz side – the teams playing for the Monte Taljaard Trophy on Monday, February 4 at 7pm.
