The UCT Ikey Tigers kicked off the second half of the WP Super League with a massive 69-3 win over Belville Tech on Saturday in extremely wet conditions on the Green Mile.
The win further signals a dominant 2014 team, as last year the Tigers struggled in their League game against the team last year, only just scraping by.
Ensuring that his team maintain their humility, coach Kevin Musikanth said “the boys have now realized that despite log position, rugby is a competitive game and no team can ever be taken lightly.”
Speaking about their return after a long break, he went on “the match was significant as it was the first league game back for over two months, so that boys had a point to prove that they have played rugby sharp over the mid-year break and made sure that no ground has been lost to those clubs that have continued to play while UCT have been on vac.”
The game saw the Tigers dominate in almost every aspect of play, however, the coach insists that it is the spirit and depth of the squad which stands out most to him.
“We have lost a host of Varsity Cup starts to Currie Cup rugby and some up country, but those that remain are committed, and relish the opportunity to play with these special players,” he said.
Testament to a brilliant set of medical staff, Musikanth explained that the boys have had very few injuries, the staff working with the players who have had problems keenly, to keep them fresh and fit. This in turn, has allowed them to keep the level of competition extremely high, as he says, “ensuring that there can be no complacency within the squad.”
A busy week awaits UCT with games against Belhar, Hamiltons and False Bay in quick succession. The coach noted that these will be three tough games, as all three teams are within the top 5 positions on the log. To this he said, “so the defining factor on where the Ikey Tigers end on the log will probably be dependent on the next week of matches.”
However, he went on, “what will happen will be the manner with which we approach each and every match.”
Next up, the Tigers take on Belhar on Saturday, 2nd July, the game starting at 18:00. The following Wednesday they come up against the Hamiltons, on their home turf.
