This weekend Maties Rugby Club in Stellenbosch will be hosting the 4th Edition of Super 7s in Partnership with Ikey Tigers old boy Kyle Brown 7s Rugby. The tournament runs over Friday 28th and Saturday 29th of October, at the Danie Craven Stadium and the two outside Coetzenberg fields.
When asked about the tournament and what he expects from the team, Ikey Tigers 7s Coach Michael Muller says,
“I am very excited for this upcoming weekend where we will be competing in the Super Sevens tournament in Stellenbosch. This tournament is very challenging as we will face very well coached sides like Maties as well as very loose clubs like Hand and Hearts. This wide range of opposition presents a tough challenge for us as we will need to adapt slightly but still maintain the way we want to play.
The Ikey Tigers have in the past produced some great 7s and also 10s rugby and have often convinced and brought home the odd trophy at USSA 7s, Varsity Sports 7s and also the Cape Town 10s. Recently two former Ikey Tigers, Kyle Brown and Dylan Sage won the Olympic Bronze Medal in Rio.
Muller explains, “I would like to see the guys playing focused sevens and be alert for every moment of the 14 minute games. We often found ourselves going through the motions at crucial moments in the Varsity Sports tournament and it is this aspect of the game which I would like to see the guys make a vast improvement.”
The tournament begins at 13:00 on Friday and runs until 18:00 on the Saturday, and has 48 teams.
