FNB UCT Travel to FNB UWC Looking to Make it Three From Three
Andile Majola
In round three of the FNB Varsity Cup the Ikey Tigers travel to their noisy neighbours, FNB UWC, looking to maintain their perfect record in the competition thus far.
This will be the first of 3 Western Cape derbies to be hosted in 2020 and the first time that FNB UCT will travel to FNB UWC in the Varsity Cup era.
The two sides have met twice in the FNB Varsity Cup competition. Once in a promotion/relegation match back in 2016 and again in round one of the 2019 competition.
The Ikey Tigers came out on top on both of those occasions and they’ll be looking to make it three from three when the sides meet on Monday.
FNB UCT have been nothing short of impressive in 2020 on their quest to make the playoffs. With victories over FNB UJ and FNB NWU thus far, a win on Monday will put them in a strong position to make the semi-finals this year.
FNB UWC will come into the match with confidence of their own off the back of their first win, a very impressive away victory against FNB Shimlas.
After finishing at the bottom of the table in 2019 and with 2020 being a promotion/relegation year FNB UWC will be determined to make sure they don’t finish at the bottom of the table again this season, as a last place finish will automatically relegate them to the Varsity Shield next season.
This fixture is guaranteed to draw the crowds as both sides have it all to play for. The match will be televised on Supersport 1 at 7pm on Monday. There will be limited tickets available for purchase from UCT Rugby Club for Monday evening.
For those that can’t travel to Belville on Monday the Ikey Pub and Grind will be streaming the game for your enjoyment, with various food and drinks specials on offer, so come on down and support the Ikey Tigers as they look to continue their hot winning streak.
