The 2026 Varsity Cup campaign got off to a challenging start for the UCT Ikey Tigers, who
fell 38–22 to FNB Tuks in their opening fixture.
Playing in front of a fired-up TUKS home crowd, the Ikeys showed courage and attacking intent with ball in hand. They moved the ball with confidence and looked dangerous in phases, but Tuks proved clinical in key moments, capitalising on opportunities and maintaining scoreboard pressure.
Despite the result, there were clear positives to take from the encounter. The Ikeys demonstrated resilience under pressure and refused to let the scoreboard dictate their approach. It was a performance that tested the squad’s character — and although it ended in defeat, it revealed the fight and belief within this group.
A Champion’s Response
Back on the Mile in Round Two, the Ikeys delivered a powerful response. In a thrilling display of high-tempo, attacking rugby, they dismantled FNB CUT 83–34.
From the opening whistle, the intent was unmistakable. The Ikeys played with pace, precision, and relentless pressure. Tries flowed from all areas of the park as power met creativity in a statement performance that lit up their home ground.
It was more than just a victory — it was a reminder of the standards expected from the defending champions and a clear message to the rest of the competition.
Next Stop: KwaZulu-Natal
In Week Three, the Ikeys hit the road as they travel to KwaZulu-Natal to face the Emeris at 19:00 in Durban North.
With momentum on their side and belief restored, the Ikeys will be looking to build consistency and continue their upward trajectory in what promises to be another exciting Varsity Cup encounter.
