The FNB Ikey Tigers, having been on a good run of form recently, were halted in their tracks as they lost out to Belhar. There was very little to choose between the two teams, with Belhar snatching a 30 – 27 victory with the last play of the game.
“We came up against a very spirited Belhar side who were pumped up for their last game of the season. The conditions weren’t ideal either, there was a strong wind and they used it well in the first half,” explained Esterhuizen.
“We went in four points behind at halftime, and we were fine with that because we would have the wind behind us in the second half,” he added.
“We had an eleven-point lead with ten minutes to go, but they played extra well then and our decision making was not as good as it should’ve been. We didn’t kick well, and one of the main differences between the two teams is that they kicked better than us,” Esterhuizen said.
Despite the fact that the FNB Ikey Tigers scored more tries than Belhar, the gap was closed because Belhar scored many penalties. However, there were still some positives to take from this match in which a relatively inexperienced team was fielded. “We really were the better side for the first seventy minutes of the game. We did play too much in our own half, but most of the time we scored points whenever we were attacking in their half,” explained Esterhuizen.
“It all just came down to inexperience in the end. A more experienced team would have been able to see it through and not concede anything so late on in the game.”
The FNB Ikey Tigers have a bit of a long break compared to this past week, as their next (and last league game) game is on the 27th of August against Hamiltons. Although Hamiltons have been in and amongst the top teams this season, the FNB Ikey Tigers will be looking to finish strong, so we’re in for a real battle in Greenpoint.
