De Allende latest Ikey Springbok

Former Ikey center Damian de Allende is due to become UCT's latest Springbok, when he makes his debut in the green and gold against Argentina at Loftus on Saturday.

Damian was a stand out member of the 2012 Ikeys Varsity Cup squad under then coach Kevin Foote. A fast, hard running payer, he is a banker when it comes to crossing the gain line, but also has an excellent pass – something that Western Province learned to appreciate when he was picked in the 2012 Vodacom Cup squad.

De Allende then took a big step up and played in place of then injured WP center Jean de Villiers and was able to add a Currie Cup trophy to an outstanding season in 2012 where he started the final with Bok center Juan de Jongh on his outside.

Another prominent Ikeys Bok of course also played in that Currie Cup final – powerhouse lock Eben Etzebeth who had won the 2011 Varsity Cup with UCT. Etzebeth back from injury will be on the bench against Argentina and we may have two Bok Ikeys on the park on Saturday – a first since the 70s, the days of Ikeys greats Chris Pope, Peter Whipp, Ian and Roy McCallum and Dugald McDonald.

De Allende also played in the 2013 Currie Cup final for WP next to Bok skipper Jean de Villiers – albeit in switched roles compared to Saturday's Bok lineup, with De Allende playing outside the former Matie.

The Bok skipper said "Damian ticks all the boxes. He is big, strong and fast. I think he has got an unbelievable pass and good feet as well,"

The 22 year old former Ikeys back was set to debut in the June Tests having been part of the Springbok training squad, but an injury delayed his first cap.

He has been a regular starter in the 2014 Super Rugby campaign for the Stormers – albeit mostly on the wing. De Allende will face experienced Argentine center Marcelo Bosch who plays for Saracens RFC.

Good luck Damian!
