Champions Will Rise

The 2018 Internal League Championship has reached the playoff stage of the competition and never before has it been so tough to call. This year the teams have it all to play for with a spot in next year’s Varsity Cup competition up for grabs.

The UCT Rugby Club is excited to bring you 5 thrilling fixtures this Wednesday night as the teams leave it all out on the field.

The first match of the night kicks off at 6pm with Smuts taking on Leo Marquard in the infamous wooden spoon challenge. Neither side will want to be on the losing end of this fixture so we’re guaranteed to have a great match up.

Next we have the Bowl semi-finals, both matches kicking off at 7pm. The UCT U20B take on the UCT 3rd XV with pride on the line as the club sides go head to head in an attempt to reach the finals.

The Saints will be looking to defend their title as Bowl Champions in 2017 when they take on Ubumbo who would love to take home some silverware of their own this season.

The final matches of the evening, the Cup semi-finals, kick off at 8pm with 2 absolutely cracking fixtures to come.

The Nadoes, perennial semi-finalists, will be taking on the Knights who haven’t made it to this stage of the competition in a while. The two sides met in the last round robin game of the season with the Knights taking home the spoils.

It’s been two weeks since then and both teams have a point to prove. For the Nadoes this is their perfect opportunity to reach the finals for the first time since 2016, whilst the Knights will want to prove that their win last time out was not a once off.

The next semi-final is a repeat of last year’s final and is sure to be a physical encounter when the Turtles take on the Cobras. The two sides have already met once this year with the Cobras walking away the victors after a last gasp kick gave them the victory. They have been their ever dominant selves this season with a perfect record thus far in the competition.

The Turtles have had to work to get to this stage of the competition and will be chomping at the bit to take on their old foe one last time and reach the finals stage of the competition for a second season in a row.

As a rugby fan you don’t want to miss out on these exciting fixtures, the Ikeys Pub & Grind will be open with food and drinks available to keep you warm on the sideline. We look forward to seeing you all out on the Green Mile this Wednesday.
