Can Busie bust a move?

Jamie Kawalsky

If our very own Business Science Graduates & Engineers didn’t convince you enough that the Tigers are not only professional level rugby players but are also absolute nerds. Mabena puts the cherry on top proving that there are proper academics playing for the Tigers.

This Bcom Financial Accounting, with a Honours degree in Tax , graduate isn’t someone you should look over too quickly. Mabena is in his final year of financial articles at BGC while still completing a post graduate in Sports Management and Finance. We think it is safe to say that Mabena has mastered this balancing act.

Mabena laughs that for him “rugby is my escape, work is the one that drains you and as I leave, it’s fun time for me.”

He also explains that his company is very lenient with his rigorous rugby schedule; especially during Varsity Cup season with touring.

While Mabena is now an absolute “player that rocks” for the Ikey Tigers; he originally played for UWC during his undergraduate degree and comments that the UWC away game was a bit nostalgic.

If you happen to see Mabena on a Sunday night, he assures us he will be (1) chilling and (2) eating pasta of some type – he has no real preference but he does ensure us that it all gets run off during the game the next day. If you happen to sleep over on Sunday night, you will be rudely awakened by push-ups immediately in the morning with some Gwijo music to get you pumped.

This charismatic gentleman is definitely the people’s person of the team, and includes “socialising” and being the reigning champ of 30 seconds as one of his hobbies; so if you’re keen to go for a drink or some chocolate cake – he’s your man.

Catch the Ikey Tigers at home on 2 March on The Green Mile. Kickoff at 7pm.
