Bonus point win against physical Helderberg
On a cold Friday evening, the u20’s had to work hard for their 22-6 win over a physical and motivated Helderberg side.
Despite an early try it always appeared that this was going to be a tough fixture. In what were not the easiest conditions, and UCT being minus their regular captain, Doug Mallett, they were never able to find true rhythym in the first half. Jannie Bester and Zandy macdonald were both able to dot down in the corner, which, against two well-taken penalties from the opposition, saw the score at 10-6 at half time.
Some concerned faces on the coaching staff were apparent, and some stern words were needed at the break.
The second half then saw an improved performance, as UCT gained more ball and territory. A great passage of play across the expanse of the field led to a Brad Paul try, and then a superb 40 metre run by Scott Watermeyer saw the bonus point accrued, and the win all but sealed for Varsity. In the end a 22-6 victory, and with a tough week ahead, some good momentum gained. Well done to Man-of the-match Christiaan Bester.
