Bax and SA Varsity Sevens at World Student Games
Ikeys center Tiger Bax was part of a strong SA Varsity Sevens side that competed in the University Games at Kazan in Russia.
The 12-man squad was captained by NMMU fullback Jarryd Buys and includes former Springbok Sevens international Ryan Nell, Bradley Moolman who represented the SA Under-20 team in 2011 and Tiger Bax who has played Super Rugby for the Stormers.
The South Africans played three training matches in Kazan – against France, Canada and Italy before starting their pools fixtures on 14 July. They beat Namibia and then Latvia on the opening day and finished their pools commitments with a win against Japan.
The SA Students beat Belgium 26:12 in the quarterfinals with Bax scoring one of the tries at Kazan.
The team faced hosts Russia in the semi finals – a team that featured seven of the countries senior Sevens players that played at the recent Sevens World Cup in Moscow. Despite a late rally the South Africans lost 14:17 and had to contend with the 3rd place playoff which they lost to Great Britain Students team by 31:14.
