A1s knock over UJ

The A1s come back with a bang in defeating a fancied UJ side 38- 0 on Wednesday evening, running in 6 tries.
A top evening for running rugby awaited the boys after a lengthy mid-season break.
UJ, having come down for just 1 match were fired up and ready to impress against the unbeaten Trojans.

Playing into the wind and in tradtional fashion, UCT ran the ball at all costs, and in no time, despite a territorial disadvantage, managed to score 2 beautiful flowing tries. This could have been more if it weren’t for an unlucky refereeing call against us, and the odd rusty handling error creeping through. These were scored by Jannie Bester and Mitch Winter, with just one of them being converted.

The territorial game continued to evade the home team, and despite battling a touch at the breakdowns, two more superb flowing tries were scored by the Mallett contingent, Greg and Doug, both being converted, which surged UCT into a 26-0 lead after just 20 minutes. These two tries, also gave the crowd something to cheer about, as the wide array of skills possessed by the boys were displayed to their fullest, as everyone manged to get a chance to dazzle.

Unfortunately the second half failed to live up to the thrill of the 1st, as UCT were perhaps guilty of trying a little too much, and the substitutes continued to roll on, keen to get back into the groove. For long periods of time, UCT dominated the set pieces like seasoned pros, but were unable to make that last pass stick.

Towards the end however, things started to come together a touch, and Mat Page was able to storm over the line twice in true hooker fashion to add to his try scoring tally. Nick Van Lierde took the man-of-the-match spoils for his tireless efforts in the forwards, and the outstanding back of the evening was Trent Jenkinson who continues to impress with his laissez-fairre approach and quick feet that would put many a dancer to shame.
Well done again to all involved.
