At a fabulous awards evening that, in true Ikey Tigers style, turned into the party of the year, we brought the curtain down on the 2024 season.
A season that saw the Ikey Tigers edged out of their 3rd Varsity Cup title by just 3 points though an 82nd minute penalty by the Shimlas in the tournament final. Heart breaking stuff!
Unsurprisingly, it was fullback, and the man named Overall Player That Rocks in the 2024 Varsity Cup, Ntokozo Makhaza, who picked up not only the Ikey Tigers Player of the Year, but also the much-coveted Player’s Player of the year.
Hooker Keagan Blankenberg was nominated 1st XV SLA Player of the Year, while flank Ian Patterson was named Ikey Man of the Year.
Mike “Jackie Moon” van Rheede joined Kudzi and Derrick in picking up Special Awards for their services to the Club over a number of years. In Van Rheede’s case, over 20 years! First as a player, now as physio and player welfare specialist, Mike was at the helm for both Varsity Cup wins, and the three University World Cup wins.
Club chairman Greg Fury was on hand to shake hands with all award winners, while club captain, Johan van Rhyn, took to the mic to welcome guests.
