FNB Ikey Tigers ready to reignite Cape derby

Round 6 of the FNB Varsity Cup sees the FNB Ikey Tigers travel down to the Danie Craven Stadium to challenge their old foe FNB Maties.

FNB Maties, the current log leaders, are undefeated in the tournament thus far and the hosts will have a lot of confidence going into this fixture in front of their home crowd.

FNB UCT are coming off the back of a real hard fought victory against the defending champions FNB UP Tuks and they themselves can go into this game with a lot of confidence.

Although FNB Maties may not have lost a game, in their previous fixture against FNB Wits they were made to look slightly vulnerable in areas of the game. The side from Johannesburg were the first side to end the maroon machine’s winning streak, with a try late in the match earning them a 30-30 draw.

FNB UCT will be looking to take that one step further and be the first side to beat the men from Stellenbosch on Monday. History shows that regardless of the form of the side from Cape Town leading up to the derby clash that they always seem to find an extra gear for this match.

This season they find themselves in a strong position up in third place on the log from some dominant set piece play and tremendous defence throughout the competition. If they can find a way to build the pressure and turn that defence into attack they could well walk away with a win and begin to mount a serious challenge for the title.

The Western Cape region may be short of water but there is no shortage of strong rugby talent and these two sides will be looking to prove that when they meet. There’s no doubt that we’re in for a mouth-watering affair which you most certainly do not want to miss.

There will be buses traveling from UCT to the game on Monday. Tickets are available from the Ikeys Vibe tent on campus. Tickets will cost you R60 for a return bus trip and entrance to the match. Get your ticket and #MakeTheTeam!

The match will also be televised on Supersport 1 at 7pm.
