Neil “Abbo” Abernethy, Dockers, Alex Mcleod and Khaya Sontsele in a 2nd XV photo from 2002
Remember Axel Mcleod, the winger who would burn guys on the outside so they could have a better look at the Afrika tatoo on his calve. Mcleod, a true Eagles legend – rumour has it he is the mentor behind Marcello Sampson’s wicked step.
Dockers – still in Blue and White
Remember Neil Docking, aka Dockers, an Ikey who had as much talent as he had attitude. Dockers saw the club into the new millenium and made history having a smoke on the first team bench to celebrate yet another cap. Ah, the good old days.
Remember Chris Rood, aka Bayroot, the Glider who would run a stealthy line and appear in a gap out of nowhere to score or put one of the Ikey speedsters away. Bayroot was part of Alan Solomon’s Ikeys of 2005 that pulled the club back from rock bottom to have an unbeaten second half and put the Blue and White back on the winning track.
A team of legends! Rob Brink looks about 15 and Tank Lanning already looked 35.
Remember Ollie Woolard, the legendary 1st Team Manager of the early 90s. He was the slayer of a streaker at Intervarsity and also know as “the lollipop man”.
Young Barney in action.
Known ubiquitously as Barney and later advanced to Barney the Boomslang following the infamous “tour of the snake” to Zim in 2000, Neil Barnard was known for his deadly accurate line-out throwing, solid scrummaging and little else on the field.
