UCT defend trophy vs False Bay

The Mark Jordaan memorial trophy will grace the UCT club for another season after UCT A beat False Bay 43:31 – scoring 7 tries to 5 on the weekend. The annual Mark Joordan memorial day was again a celebration of rugby and the substancial crowd paid tribute to the two club’s long standing and positive relationship.

The False Bay 1st team, coached by former UCT U21 coach Brendan Fogarty and captained by fromer UCT 1st team player Justin van Winkle had the UCT A team on their toes and the Bay crowd on their feet in the opening minutes of the main match, scoring two early tries.

The annual Mark Jordaan Memorial Rugby matches have been contested between the UCT and False Bay Rugby Clubs since 1989. As is tradition, they are the first friendly matches of the season and one of the few occasions where Super League B favourites False Bay get to take on a Super League A big gun.

The trophy is awarded based on the overall performance of all participating sides on the day and is a tribute not only to the late Mark Jordaan, who played for both UCT and False Bay RFC, but to the great history and relationship between the two clubs.

Ikey Tigers travel to Jozi

Monday will see the Tigers play their first away match after a narrow loss to Pukke and an emphatic win over Tukkies last Monday on the packed Green Mile. UJ have so far beaten TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) 35:12, but went down heavily to Shimlas (University of the Free State) 6:54 in their most recent home fixture.

In a magnificent display of running rugby, the University of Cape Town (UCT) ran in eight tries to beat their Pretoria rivals, Tukkies, 55-24 in a thrilling FNB Varsity Cup match in front of a packed crowd at Groote Schuur on Monday night. It is the second big upset of Round Two of South Africa’s exciting new universities tournament, a venture that has the pulses racing.

Ikey Tigers team vs Tukkies

Last week the inaugural Varsity Cup exploded onto the SA Rugby scene, with some sizzling Rugby and a spirited performance of the Ikey Tigers, which saw them go down narrowly to reigning Super Bowl champs Pukke (17:23). 

Next up for the Ikeys are Tukkies – The University of Pretoria – who themselves had a great comeback to draw 31-all with UCT archrivals
Maties in Stellenbosch in their opening match.

It promises to be a fast and all out rugby affair and UCT being the underdogs again, will be keen to take their chances this time – Monday night is BLUE WHITE and TIGHT.
