Preview VC final: Ikey Tigers vs Maties

The universities of Cape Town (Ikeys) and Stellenbosch
(Maties) will resume their intense rivalry, which has been going for
almost a century, when they meet in the FNB Varsity Cup Final at the
Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Monday (KO 18.45 – live on Supersport1).
 

The final outcome will determine not only the first winners of the
inaugural Varsity Cup, but also the bragging rights in the Western
Province, where the two southern universities are based.

What a game! It would have been some of the most dramatic 80 minutes of the Varsity
Cup so far and a definite reminder that this is Rugby that Rocks. It was a
déjà vu style copy of the first UCT-Pukke match
on the same field, when Pukke was also way ahead at half time, after
having played with the wind in their backs, this time the score was
23:10 after 40 minutes, in favour of the visitors from Potchefstroom.

UCT coaches John Dobson and Robbie Fleck have gone with proven combinations, announcing their side to take on Pukke in the Varsity Cup semi-final played Monday 31st at 2.30pm on the Green Mile. A sell-out crowd is expected for this North-South clash, which UCT will tackle in the well deserved but unfamiliar role of favourites, after dominating the competition so far.

UCT captain JJ Gagiano’s team finished the final match of the George Easter Weekend with yet another 5 pointer, beating Freestate rivals Shimlas by 4 tries to 1 – it was also the final match of the Varsity Cup round robin.
The match had no impact on the log standings, with all the remaining semi-final spots booked earlier in the day, so UCT coaches John Dobson and Robbie Fleck gave the fresher legs of their squad a run.

UCT’s Ikey Tigers have already secured a home semi-final in the inaugural FNB Varsity Cup, but the Capetonians would dearly love to end their Easter Weekend sojourn to George with yet another victory. The Ikeys started the Easter Festival on Thursday with a well-deserved 38-32 win over local rivals, Stellenbosch, before booking a home semi-final courtesy of a crushing 38-7 victory over Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Saturday.
“We weren’t at our best on Saturday,” admitted UCT coach John Dobson, “but we’ll take the win and first place on the log!”
