UCT’s Ikey Tigers have already secured a home semi-final in the inaugural FNB Varsity Cup, but the Capetonians would dearly love to end their Easter Weekend sojourn to George with yet another victory. The Ikeys started the Easter Festival on Thursday with a well-deserved 38-32 win over local rivals, Stellenbosch, before booking a home semi-final courtesy of a crushing 38-7 victory over Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Saturday.
“We weren’t at our best on Saturday,” admitted UCT coach John Dobson, “but we’ll take the win and first place on the log!”

Tigers beat NMMU to secure home semi

It’s "See you later at the Green Mile", for the table topping Ikeys, after the Cape Town side managed a scrappy victory over NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University).
Today’s 5 log points means the top spot is secured even before the final league match (on Monday vs Shimlas) and the home semi final is in the blue and white striped bag.

The top seated team took on the thus far winless and bottom of the log side from PE in their second feature of the Varsity Cup Bumper Easter Weekend in George and given those facts, it was always going to be a tough assignment .

The Ikey Tigers have cemented their spot at the top of the log with a great win over arch rivals Maties.
After being 20:14 down at halftime UCT played all the rugby in the second half, putting Maties under relentless pressure with their trademark running rugby and came out tops in their first fixture of the Varsity Cup Bumper Easter Weekend.

Three UCT wins in Ceres

It has been am excellent day at out in Ceres for the UCT teams and the hard pre-season work showed on the field as all three teams comprehensively outplayed their counterparts from the Boland.

The UCT A team in particular was in dangerous running form and was just to fast, to skilled and too clever for the big Ceres team as they won 38:26, leading 26:6 at half time.

UCT travel to Ceres

UCT take on the 2006 Boland Champion Ceres this Saturday 15 March 2008.

It will be the last friendly before the season begins early April and also the last chance for some of the youngsters to put up their hand to be included in the Ikey Tigers’s Varsity Cup squad to travel to George for the Easter Bumper weekend. In the 2007 showdown between the two clubs Boland narrowly defeated the UCT 1st XV, so Richard Ince’s team certainly has a point to prove this year.
