One point between Ikeys and Maties

It was a classic Intervarsity between Maties and Ikeys at Coetzenburg stadium on Wednesday night in the end it was there to be won by the Ikey Tigers, but a last move kick from the touchline sailed just wide off the uprights and Maties triumphed 28:27.

Rivalry doesn't get bigger than that of the Blue and White and the Maroon – dating back to 1911 and Wednesday night's game had all the drama, the passion and the flair that would make both fans and former players of either club proud.

The Ikey Tigers were lead by a new skippe,r after Richard Steward was handed the reins and the experienced winger managed to help inspire a team that included no fewer than seven 20 year olds.

Maties took their chance first going up 7:0 after the teams had seized one another up with some early pressure. Then it was some slick play by UCT that saw flyhalf Ross Jones Davies glide through to dot down under the posts and convert his own try to pull level at 7:7.

Skipper Richard Steward was next in line to put the Ikeys in front for the first time after Maties had converted a penalty. Tiger Bax played a clever chip and Steward was there to pounce on the ball and move up 12:10.

The Maties of course are also no strangers to giving the ball some air and executed an perfect draw and pass through many hands to send over the last man out wide to regain the lead.

The Ikeys marched a maul 20m down field which was eventually pulled down which resulted in a 3 pointer by Jones Davies. 23:15 was the half time score and a thrilling second half awaited the brave supporters in the stands.

Both sides stuck with their intent to attack, but it took until the final quarter of the match for the score to change, when Maties pulled ahead 28:15.

Then, with the odds stacked against never say die Ikeys put their magic man Tiger Bax in the limelight when the center ran a fantastic line to finish a great individual try.

It wouldn't be an Intervarsity if things didn't go down to the wire and in true from UCT scored with the last move to make it 27:28 and set up a kick on the touchline to possibly claim a great victory. But the fat lady was wearing maroon that evening and the kick went just wide.

A great game of rugby and despite the disappointment, this was a brilliant result for coach JJ Gagiano and his young side.

Director of rugby Kevin Musikanth was suitably proud: "For this young side to put themselves into a position to win this game was excellent and JJ has done extremely well with the guys".

Maties captain Helmut Lehman was humble in victory and commented: "Tough intervarsity clash last night at the Danie Craven. Ikey Tigers played very well to give themselves a shot at a win."

UCT Eagles drew with their counterparts and the thirds lost 7:36, while the U20's went down heavily 0:52.

The Ikeys now face the tough assigment of playing Belhar away at Accordion Park this Saturday. The team will be announced following the Friday night captain's run.

It’s Maties vs Ikeys

UCT will travel to Stellenbosch, to take on Maties in a massive Wednesday night clash at Coetzenburg stadium.

The Ikeys of course could not play their fixture against Helderberg due to a water logged Green Mile last Saturday. Meanwhile, Maties travelled to Hamiltons – who came fresh from a loss at UCT – and the Green Point team bounced back in fine style to beat the Stellenbosch students by 20:16 and move up the log to second spot.

This was only the Maties second loss this season – the first one of course was against the Ikey Tigers at Intervarsity in May.

UCT are fourth on the log table with two games in hand, while Durbel have slipped to third, after they played out a tough 17:17 draw against neighbours and local rivals Bellville Tech.

UCT will look to keep the great momentum from the Hamilton's victory, while Maties will no doubt want to right their slipped points at Green Point and be desperate to bounce back.

The Ikeys Eagles (2nd team) also have a cracking fixture ahead and are well and truly in the hunt for their league title, so need to win to stay in the running. The U20A Trojans, who have picked up a valuable win against Hammies, are keen to get one over their favourite rivals, after having been pipped at Intervarsity.

All to play for tonight in Stellies! Come and support or check in on https://twitter.com/ikeytigers for updates

Ikeys blitz Hammies

UCT pulled off a tremendous victory against powerhouse club Hamilton's at the Green Mile, beating the visitors 25:12.

The UCT U20 Trojans and Eagles set the tone for the night beating their counterparts from Green Point.

The Ikey Tigers had a great night in tough conditions on the wet and slippery Green Mile and could not put a foot wrong going up 19:0 following tries by Mike Kennedy, Luke Bax, Dylan Sage in the first 15 minutes.

UCT continued to do most of the playing, using the wind and conditions well and added penalties to edge ahead further leading their stunned visitors 22:0 at the half.

As so often at UCT the conditions created a game of two halves, but UCT kept running the ball playing into the wind now and thoroughly enjoyed their night of rugby, adding another Ross Jones Davies penalty to make it 25:0.

WP scrumhalf Nic Groom and center Damian de Allende were in attendance and commented: "It really was champagne rugby out there – great to come watch the Ikeys boys."

What followed was a gutsy effort to stop the wounded beast that was Hammies, as the Green Point outfit started clawing their way back into the game with a first try with about 20 minutes to go – 25:7.

Hammies to their credit finished strong and added another try for the final score of 25:12 to end a fantastic Cape derby match.

"I thought it was a superb performance and a fantastic defensive effort in particular." said a happy Director of Rugby Kevin Musikanth.

Credit to coach JJ Gagiano for this great win and the brilliant turn around following the narrow loss to Vics just 5 days prior.

Up next UCT face Helderberg also at home.

Try scorers:

Ikeys gear up for Hammies

UCT are taking on Hamilton's on the Green Mile on Wednesday evening in a classic cape winter clash.

Hamilton's are sitting second currently with two games in hand and will look to make amends for their 15:19 loss to UCT in Green Point earlier in the season. The match has some added spice, as the team from the oldest rugby club in SA features two former Ikeys in prop Dylan Rogers and lock Mike Ledwidge.

UCT's coach JJ Gagiano meanwhile has rung the changes due to some injuries, but has also been able to call up a few players returning into the fold. Scrumhalf Liam Slatem has recovered from an injury sustained in the Varsity Cup and is back in action. Also back, though on the bench is hooker Neil Rautenbach who had a stint with the Griquas in Kimberley.

Evergreen center Andre Coetzer (pictured) moves into the side place of Andrew Norton who will come off the bench and Brad Bosman gets a start in the second row.

The first team match kicks off at 9pm, the Eagles start at 19.45, 3rds at 18.35 and U20A at 18.25.

Gear up in Wellies and rain kit and come support this classic Cape Town clash on the Green Mile.
