Mbiyozo’s in Sevens Heaven

Grant Shub chats to promising UCT first team player and new Sevens star…

MPHO MBIYOZO is one chilled-out dude. He arrives in his sweat pants, a hoodie and baseball cap; everything about him screams rapper. And, looking at his initials, one could be forgiven for thinking he’s Cape Town’s version of Eminem.
But get rid of the rapper-like gear and Mbiyozo transforms into the green and gold of the Bok Sevens team. When he takes to the field for a fitness session, one can tell this guy is serious about his rugby career as he leaves his carefree persona for the sidelines. “I am fairly laid-back… but I set myself goals and like to achieve them.”

Enter: The Varsity Cup

The Varsity Cup could revolutionise rugby at UCT and across all universities in South Africa. It is a great initiative being launched by Canterbury, Steinhoff and First National Bank. FNB have been loyal sponsors of UCTRFC and other tertiary institutions and it long has been their vision to see a rugby equivalent of College Football that is so popular in the States in South Africa. Francois Pienaar has been driving this for a while now and although in embryonic form it appears that it is finally coming to fruition.

UCT is in the privileged position to be one of the 8 institutions invited to compete in the inaugural Varsity Cup in 2008, already dubbed here at UCT as ‘Monday Night Lights’.

UCT bids farewell to Spencer King

It is with regret that we inform you that Spencer King will be resigning his position as UCT RFC Director of Rugby with effect from the end of this year. UCT RFC has been extremely fortunate in being able to enjoy the services of someone as competent as Spencer during the past nine years. During his tenure Spencer has made a significant contribution to the club and has been instrumental in creating the very efficient administrative structure the club currently enjoys. We are most grateful to Spencer for all that he has done for the club and bid him farewell and wish him all the best for the future.

Here an excerpt from Spencer’s speech at his farewell function – wise words from a true UCT stalward:

In my time, the club has experienced some highs (the two that immediately spring to mind are the IV win of 2004, where I behaved particularly badly; and the near league win in 2006) and some lows, but it has always remained strong and survived…

UCTRFC Rugby Dinner

uct_rugbydinner.jpgWadda was definitely the place to be on Wednesday the 3rd of October.

The UCT RFC players dinner was held in this unusual venue, but the response and especially the amount of ladies present confirmed the choice. Andrew Martin had done an excellent job organising the evening and MC of the night Ross McKernan was, as always, in great form.
Report and photos to follow…

In the meantime the list of awards for Teams and Players who had an outstanding 2007 season, congratulations once again.

UCTRFC 200 Club Black Tie Dinner

The Annual UCTRFC 200 Club Black Tie Dinner
was held at the
Cape Sun on Friday 17 August 2007.

uct_blacktie01.jpgThe dinner was well attended with over 300 people being entertained by the
guest speaker, comedian Paul
Slabolepsky, who is a former UCTRFC rugby player. His
amusing speech also had some poignant moments as Paul recounted stories of his
UCT student days during which he met his stage partner of many years, Bill Flynn, who sadly has passed away
recently. It was fitting that a table of Paul’s former team mates were able to
be present at the dinner. Paul was ably assisted on stage by MC Mike Wills who kept the proceedings
